If it seems like there is a drugstore on every corner that’s because the big chains (most notably industry leaders Walgreen Co. and CVS Caremark ) are doing their best to see that there is. With more than 12,000 locations between them, Walgreen and CVS are expanding aggressively, both through new store construction (Walgreen’s preferred but not exclusive mode of growth) and acquisitions. In fact, the Big Two combined account for about half of all the chain drugstores in the US.
