Summary

Many great names in American department store retailing are disappearing faster than you can say Macy’s. The 100-year-old Marshall Field's chain -- now a division of Macy's Inc. -- is the latest casualty and underscores the sad fact that the era of the regional department store is over. Field’s, a Chicago institution, along with Filene’s, Hecht’s, Robinson-May, and many others have all been renamed Macy. Upon their disappearance from the retail landscape, they joined other venerable-yet-extinct chains (Remember Gimbel's and B. Altman & Co.?) that got their start at the turn of the last century catering to the carriage trade, in the history books.
