Summary

Keeping an older car running is what keeps the auto parts retail industry running. After years of consolidation, the auto parts retail segment has come to be dominated by large, nationwide players like AutoZone (#1 in the industry) and Advance Auto Parts  (#2). In a deal that will create the nation's third-largest auto parts retailer, O'Reilly Automotive moved to acquire its smaller rival CSK Auto in 2008. Ailing Pep Boys, which runs nearly 600 stores in about three dozen states, is restructuring and has put itself up for sale. These companies make-it-or-break-it on some fairly simple factors: same store sales growth, increased presence in existing markets, and growth in new geographic regions.
