How is the restaurant business like the military? Join either and you're bound to take a lot of orders. The dining industry in the US accounts for more than $500 million in sales and encompasses about 945,000 eating outlets. Restaurants and foodservice operations are typically segmented between full-service and fast-food concepts, but can be further divided into upscale dining and specialty eateries, such as coffeehouses and snack shops.The biggest segment in terms of numbers of locations is fast-food.
Although the pace of job growth slowed during the last recession, the industry has added jobs at a fairly steady pace of 1 to 2 percent per year for the past decade. Demand is higher in rapidly growing markets. Because the industry is highly labor-intensive, job growth is a good indicator of industry volume.
