Summary

Goethe once said, "We must always change, renew, rejuvenate ourselves; otherwise we harden." That pretty accurately describes the mindset of the gambling industry, which includes casinos and state lotteries, pari-mutuel wagering, and charitable gaming, as well as firms that manufacture gaming machines. Gaming companies have been relentlessly expanding in existing markets, moving into new ones, and searching for additional outlets to attract gamers.

Many of the world's largest casino operators continue to funnel billions of dollars into existing markets as, ironically, gambling becomes less important to the bottom line. Non-gaming operations such as restaurants, hotels, retail stores, and attractions now account for a large portion (more than half in some markets) of casino sales.
