Goethe once said, "We must always change, renew, rejuvenate ourselves; otherwise we harden." That pretty accurately describes the mindset of the gambling industry, which includes casinos and state lotteries, pari-mutuel wagering, and charitable gaming, as well as firms that manufacture gaming machines.
Many of the world's largest casino operators continue to funnel billions of dollars into existing markets as, ironically, gambling becomes less important to the bottom line. Non-gaming operations such as restaurants, hotels, retail stores, and attractions now account for a large portion (more than half in some markets) of casino sales. Consolidation is still very much alive in the industry.
The gambling industry has grown rapidly in the US as gambling has become more socially acceptable and as state governments have welcomed gambling as a major source of revenue. Casino hotels, which account for the majority of industry revenue, have become larger, generating average annual revenue of more than $100 million.
Hoover's has developed its own industry classifications to better serve its customers.
