Although our popular images of the advertising executive have generally not been positive (the bumbling Darrin Stephens from Bewitched and the conniving Amanda Woodward in Melrose Place, for example), advertising is an important piece of the puzzle in a consumer-driven economy.
To provide a complete range of services to customers, the large advertising companies have been built by acquisition during the past decade. Rather than absorbing acquired agencies into a larger organization, the advertising companies operate them mainly as separate entities. Consolidation has been encouraged by the growth of customers and of large media companies, like Viacom and Disney.
Hoover's has developed its own industry classifications to better serve its customers. These classifications are mapped to the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) and the older U.S. Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system.
