Summary

When it comes to beverages designed to do something other than quench thirst, the granddaddy of them all is Gatorade. Cooked up in a lab in 1965 by Robert Cade, a kidney-disease specialist on the faculty at the University of Florida, at the behest of the university's assistant football coach who thought the team's performance needed some enhancing, Gatorade was designed to rehydrate and replenish carbohydrates and electrolytes lost during aerobic exercise. (The drink was named for Florida's team, the Gators.)
