Characterized by mature markets and low growth, the alcoholic beverage industry struggles against a global health kick and heavy price competition. Although it is in a close race with wine, beer remains the industry's top seller, and major brands are growing slowly.
M&As have resulted in a few large companies dominating the industry. The number of companies in the US brewery industry, excluding independents, declined 30 percent in a recent five-year period. Three companies now account for 90 percent of industry revenue.
