Summary

Several companies make small planes and commuter/regional jets -- but when it comes to large commercial airliners, there are really only two names to consider: Boeing and Airbus. A subsidiary of EADS (BAE SYSTEMS sold its 20% stake back to EADS in 2006), Airbus was long runner-up to Boeing, whose 727, 737, 747, 757, and 767 models are synonymous with air travel. With aggressive pricing, however, Airbus gained quickly on Boeing during the 1990s and in 2003 surpassed Boeing in aircraft orders and deliveries for the first time ever. Airbus repeated the feat in 2004, delivering 320 planes to Boeing's 285.
